GRACE BIBLE on table with plants around it symbolizing growth

This 31-day Bible study plan will help you grow deeper in grace, strengthen your faith, and walk in the maturity God has called you to. 🌸

Have you ever looked at a tree and been amazed at how strong and beautiful it’s become—yet remembered that it once started out as a tiny, fragile seed? That’s a lot like us in our walk with Christ.

The moment we accept Jesus, we are made new. But just like a seed needs time, water, sunlight, and care to grow into a mighty tree, we too grow… slowly, steadily, and with grace.

In this growing in grace devotional, we will find out growing in grace isn’t about having everything figured out or always doing everything perfectly. It’s about becoming more like Jesus day by day—learning from Him, leaning on Him, and letting Him shape who we are. It’s about progress, not perfection. And it’s about understanding that God is patient with us. He’s not in a rush. He’s committed to the process of growing us in love, truth, and strength.

So many of us feel like we “should be further along by now.” Maybe you’ve been walking with the Lord for years, or maybe you’re just beginning. Either way, the truth is: God’s grace is what grows us, not our own striving. He gently invites us to remain in Him, and as we do, He does the work within us.

Let’s explore what it really means to grow in grace—what it looks like, what it feels like, and how we can keep showing up for the beautiful, sometimes messy, process of becoming who He made us to be.

Spoiler alert… you can download your free printable growing in grace pdf at the end of this blog: 31-Day Bible reading plan (with daily scriptures, lessons & applications, Bible study & journaling materials, and extra study and reflection questions!).

What does the Bible mean by grow in grace?

When the Bible talks about “growing in grace,” it’s not just a pretty phrase—it’s a powerful invitation. We can find the growing in grace scripture in 2 Peter 3:18:

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Growing in grace means becoming more and more shaped by God’s character, His love, and His truth as we walk with Him each day.

Grace isn’t just the starting point of our faith journey—it’s the atmosphere we live in as believers. It’s God’s unearned favor, His patient kindness, and His empowering strength working in us.

When we grow in grace, we’re learning to rely less on our own strength and more on His. We begin to trust His timing, His teaching, and His gentle hand in every part of our lives.

It also means becoming more gracious ourselves—toward others and even toward ourselves. As we experience God’s grace more deeply, it changes how we live, how we love, and how we see the world.

Growing in grace is the beautiful process of becoming more like Jesus, step by step, day by day, and season by season.

Stay Rooted in the Source

Growth starts with being connected to the right source. In John 15, Jesus describes Himself as the vine and us as the branches. He says that when we remain in Him, we will bear much fruit—but apart from Him, we can do nothing.

Lord Jesus asks us to follow Him. Remaining in Jesus is a daily, personal choice. It means staying close to Him in prayer, in the Word, and through the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Just like a plant draws its life from the soil and sunlight, we draw our strength, nourishment, and grace from Jesus. When we’re rooted in Him, we’re able to grow in the way He desires.

But let’s be honest—life tries to pull us in a million directions. Distractions, disappointments, and even our doubts can tug at our roots. That’s why staying in the Word and spending quiet moments with the Lord is so vital. We need to study the Bible for ourselves.

It’s not about checking off boxes.

It’s about staying connected to the One who grows us.

Don’t Rush the Process

We live in a world that loves quick results. But God is not in a hurry. Spiritual growth takes time—just like physical growth does. Think about how long it takes for a tree to mature or for fruit to ripen. You can’t microwave spiritual maturity!

God knows the perfect pace for your growth. He’s not frustrated with you.

In fact, He’s cheering you on.

He sees how you’re showing up, even when it’s hard. He sees your quiet obedience and the way you keep trusting Him even when things don’t make sense. That’s growth. That’s grace at work.

And the most beautiful part? God promises to finish what He started in you (Philippians 1:6). So you can breathe, relax, and take the pressure off. You don’t have to strive or prove anything. Just stay open, stay willing, and let Him do the growing.

Let the Fruit Show

As we grow in grace, the evidence starts to show—not always in big, flashy ways, but in the everyday stuff. Are you becoming more patient with your kids? More peaceful in your thoughts? More forgiving toward yourself? That’s fruit.

The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23) is a beautiful marker of grace-growth. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—they don’t come from sheer willpower. They come from walking with Jesus and letting His Spirit shape you from the inside out.

And remember, fruit doesn’t appear overnight. It develops over time. Some seasons you’ll feel like you’re blooming. Other times you’ll feel pruned. But both seasons are necessary. Trust that God knows what He’s doing in your heart, even when the growth isn’t immediately visible.

As part of this growing in grace Bible study, let’s look at our own lives and take time for reflection.

Personal Reflection

Can you see any signs of growth in your life lately?

Maybe you’re not where you want to be yet, but praise God—you’re not where you used to be either!

Friend, you don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep showing up and staying connected to Jesus. Keep seeking Him. Keep leaning on grace. Keep letting Him teach you, stretch you, and love you into deeper growth. You’re doing better than you think.

So take a deep breath. Be gentle with yourself. You’re growing in grace, and that’s exactly what God wants for you.
