For me, honestly, I didn’t have that when growing up, as I was raised as an atheist. But since I gave my life to Christ at age 25, I always try to be mindful of Christ, His coming, His sacrifice, and His anticipated second coming during the weeks prior to Christmas.
However, I have to be honest again because of the busyness of the month of December and Christmas season, it can sometimes become challenging to stay focused on Christ (the true reason for the season).

What Does the Bible Say About Advent?

The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming” or “arrival”. It’s a translation of the Greek word Parousia.
Advent is a season of anticipation and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. While the word “Advent” itself doesn’t appear in Scripture, its meaning is deeply rooted in biblical promises and prophecies.
Advent focuses on key themes found throughout the Bible, including hope, peace, joy, and love. These Advent Sunday themes are reminders of God’s plan for humanity, as foretold in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament.
Advent scripture readings often center on the prophecies of the Messiah in Isaiah, the joyful announcement of Jesus’ birth in the Gospels, and the anticipation of Christ’s return.

What Are the Key Messages of Advent?
The messages of Advent are timeless and deeply meaningful for Christians:
- Hope in God’s Promises: Advent reminds us of God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises. Verses from Isaiah and the Psalms highlight the hope that sustained God’s people as they awaited the coming Messiah.
- Joy in Jesus’ Birth: The 25 days of Advent Bible verses often include passages like Luke 2:10-11, where the angel announces good news of great joy. This joy is for all people and points us to the Savior born in Bethlehem.

When it comes to reading the Bible, there is never a wrong passage. The entirety of God’s Word is perfect to read. The Advent is all about our Lord Jesus, and so is the Word of God, from the Old Testament to the New Testament.
Thus, in some way, you could read any book. If you are new to reading the Bible, it can be more important to choose which book of the Bible to read first.
Having said that, the Bible is filled with passages that beautifully complement the season of Advent. Some popular books and chapters include:
- Isaiah: Rich with messianic prophecies, Isaiah lays the foundation for understanding the significance of Jesus’ birth.
- Luke: The first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke are often the heart of Advent daily readings because they recount the events surrounding Jesus’ birth.
- Matthew: The genealogy and birth story in Matthew 1–2 highlight how Jesus fulfills Old Testament promises.
- Psalms: These poetic songs of praise and prophecy enrich the Advent experience, drawing us into worship and Advent reflection.
